Follow Me: A Call to Die. A Call to Live. Audio CD – Audiobook, CD, Unabridged
Author: Visit ‘s David Platt Page ID: 1414375689

From the Back Cover

What did Jesus really mean when He said, “Follow Me”?
Is it possible for people to say they believe in Jesus but not truly be born again? Is it possible for people to claim they have accepted Christ into their hearts yet not actually be Christians?

Not only is it possible, but according to Pastor David Platt, it’s also highly probable. The author of the bestselling book Radical is convinced that many people in our churches today are misled as to what it truly means to be a follower of Christ. Western culture has drained the lifeblood out of Christianity and replaced it with a watered-down version of the gospel that is so palatable it isn’t even real anymore.

“Follow me,” Jesus calls.

Two simple words that change everything. You will never be bored. You will always have purpose. You will never lack joy. But it will cost you. This call is not an invitation to pray a prayer. It is a summons to lose your life.

A call to die. A call to live. Have you answered that call?

David Platt’s Radical was one of those rare books that catapults a first-time author straight to top of the charts. For two years it was a fixture on the lists of bestsellers and even today it remains a top seller in the Christian ranks. Radical was a call for Christians to escape the doldrums of the American dream and to live for something better, something that counts for far more. Books with this message are hardly a rarity today, but what set this one apart was its grounding in the good news of the gospel.

Almost three years later Platt brings us his follow-up, Follow Me. Where in Radical he exposed cultural values and ideas that are opposed to the gospel, his purpose in Follow Me is "to move from what we let go of to whom he hold on to. I want to explore not only the gravity of what we must forsake in this world, but also the greatness of the one we follow in this world. I want to expose what it means to die to ourselves and to live in Christ." He says

I am convinced that when we take a serious look at what Jesus really meant when he said, "Follow me," we will discover that there is far more pleasure to be experienced in him, indescribably greater power to be realized with him, and a much higher purpose to be accomplished for him than anything else this world has to offer. And as a result, we will all–every single Christian–eagerly, willingly, and gladly lose our lives to know and proclaim Christ, for this is simply what it means to follow him.

The fact is that there are multitudes of people who profess faith in Jesus Christ but who are not truly his followers.
This is the best book I’ve read on basic Christianity in years. For a pastor to write what he has written (and what Francis Chan wrote in the Foreword) heartens me in my deep. I believe every elder of every church and every trustee of every Christian school should read this book–and heed its message.

Given that I’ve spent most of my adult life working as a seminary professor, I couldn’t wait to find out if David Platt went to seminary himself. Lo and behold, he did. He has an earned Ph.D from a seminary, and it shows. His theology is excellent. He does not promote a works righteousness theology; he promotes what the apostle Paul promotes–the obedience of faith. He is so truthful that he even tells his readers that if their pastors aren’t teaching AND modeling biblical Christianity, then their pastors lack legitimate authority. That’s not a Baptist thing to say, that’s a Christian thing to say. Few are the professing Christians who will admit that authority isn’t legitimized by virtue of a person’s position in an organization.

Authority in Christ is a totally different thing than positional authority in a religious organization that claims to be Christian but whose top leaders do not model repentance. It’s one thing to admit sin in a political way and a whole different ballgame to repent from sin in humility by making restitution. The gospel calls for repentance, even though our repentance is not what saves us. We’re saved by grace. We’re saved by the blood of Jesus. Platt says it well in his remark that many have exchanged the blood of Christ for the "Kool Aid" that people drink when they go with the flow of the politics and take the easy way out and just keep on sinning as if grace issues us a license to sin without genuine remorse.
Follow Me by David Platt [Book Review]

Initial Questions:
What is it about David Platt’s writing that allows him to turn, the "Pick up your cross and follow me," of Jesus’ teachings into a national best seller? (I’m suspicious…) Or, to play the cynic, does he lure people in with an intriguing, difficult message and then deflate the call to follow, or completely toss the message aside?

Kudos to David Platt for sparking a healthy critique of the church; moderate examination is always a sign of health. One thing *Follow Me* strongly accomplished was encouraging the question, "Is my experience of Christianity the full picture of what Jesus brings?"

*Follow Me* amplifies this healthy critique from Platt’s earlier nationally resonant book, *Radical*. In *Follow Me*, Platt writes to reveal the who and how of "radical" Christian living.

In my reading, I discovered three healthy things and four unhealthy things from *Follow Me*.

* *Follow Me* brings the question: "Isn’t there supposed to be more than reading my Bible, going to church, and talking to people about Jesus? Jesus seems to ask more…"

* Platt spells out the reality and origin of God causing new life to take root within us (p. 18); he illustrates that people who come face to face with Jesus *do* experience change and their lives are called into something different from their surroundings. This is the sanctifying work of grace.

* *Follow Me* spells out the necessity of repentance and grace in our world (p.

Series: North Point ResourcesHardcover: 208 pagesPublisher: Multnomah Books; 1St Edition edition (June 1, 2006)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 1590525140ISBN-13: 978-1590525142 Product Dimensions: 5.7 x 0.8 x 8.5 inches Shipping Weight: 8 ounces (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #7,278 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #3 in Books > Christian Books & Bibles > Ministry & Evangelism > Preaching #3 in Books > Christian Books & Bibles > Christian Living > Leadership #3 in Books > Christian Books & Bibles > Ministry & Evangelism > Sermons
Anyone who has heard Andy Stanley preach knows that he is an effective communicator. Now, Stanley and coauthor Lane Jones let us in on the secrets of effective preaching in Communicating for Change.

The first half of the book is a fable about a discouraged preacher, Pastor Ray Martin, who is desperate for help. He meets with an acquaintance, a successful businessman, who flies him by helicopter to meet Will Graham, a truck driver who has just the answers that Ray needs. By the time Ray leaves, he has a new approach and new hope for his preaching.

The second half of the book explains this model of preaching, covering topics like the goal of preaching, how to outline the message relationally, and how to engage the audience.

The model offered by Stanley and Lane has two main strengths. First, it centers preaching around one central idea, taken from the text. This is more effective than other approaches, which fail to capture the central idea of the text. In trying to communicate everything, they communicate nothing. Haddon Robinson and others have also written on the importance of the big idea in preaching.

Second, Stanley and Lane also present a relational outline approach to preaching. Their outlines are built around "the communicator’s relationship with the audience rather than content." They remind us that "the way we organize material on paper is very different from how we process information in a conversation." This relational approach can lead to better communication of the Biblical idea of a passage.

The book is not without its problems. The leadership fable, in which an unlikely hero rescues a hapless practitioner, may be an overused approach.
After finishing this book, I was reminded of the following verse in 2 Timothy 2:15 – Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. Not everyone is called to preach or to give Bible studies but this book, at the very minimum, allows us to see how much work and thought is involved when a pastor gives a sermon/Bible study. Because of that, I very appreciate my pastor who must have worked really hard to preach God’s word. Here are the takeaway lessons that are transcribed verbatim from the book for each of the relevant chapters. In order to see how these points were derived, you’ll need to read the book which I highly recommend:

1. Determine your goal
1a. Our approach to communicating should be shaped by our goal in communicating.
1b. Our goal should be life change. Specifically, to teach people how to live a life that reflects the values, principles, and truths of the Bible.
1c. When you commit to preach for life change, your preparation is not complete until you have answered two very important questions: So what? and Now what?

2. Pick a point
2a. In a one point message it is essential for the communicator to know the answer to two questions: What is the one thing I want my audience to know? What do I want them to do about it?
2b. For most communicators, the biggest challenge will not be finding the one idea, but eliminating the other three.
2c. The process for developing a one point message is as follows: 1) Dig until you find it. 2) Build everything around it. 3) Make it stick.

3. Create a map.

Let’s talk about how tremendously much I loved this book.

Aristotle ("Ari") is a sensitive yet somewhat angry 15-year-old growing up in Texas in the 1980s. The baby of the family, he feels disconnected from his older sisters, and his older brother went to prison when Ari was very young, and his family never speaks of him. He also feels as if his father, a Vietnam vet suffering from PTSD, is a mystery to him, and he wishes that weren’t the case. He spends most of his days alone, distant from others.

"In order to be wildly popular you had to make people believe that you were fun and interesting. I just wasn’t that much of a con artist."

One day at the local swimming pool, Ari meets Dante, a boy his age from another high school. Dante offers to teach Ari how to swim, and the two begin an intense friendship. Their conversations touch on poetry, art, their shared Mexican-American heritage (of which Dante is less enamored), and the way they don’t quite "get" their parents, although Dante’s relationship with his parents is much more open and emotionally honest. which Ari envies.

"I was mostly invisible. I think I liked it that way. And then Dante came along."

As their relationship intensifies, Ari finds himself simultaneously needing Dante’s friendship and being scared by that need. He’s still not willing to confront his parents with the questions he has about his father and his brother, which makes him angrier and sadder. And when a split-second decision leaves their friendship on unequal footing, Dante reveals that his feelings for Ari are stronger than friendship. Ari doesn’t want to lose Dante’s friendship but he’s not willing to deal with Dante’s feelings.

Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus Pdf Download

Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus: A Devout Muslim Encounters Christianity MP3 CD – Audiobook, MP3 Audio, Unabridged
Author: Visit ‘s Nabeel Qureshi Page ID: 1501262947

Review

Dr. Qureshi’s book Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus offers the fascinating story of the conversion of a sincere young Ahmadiyya man who tried his best to seek Allah and eventually fell in love with Christ. I trust that this book can be a powerful encouragement for all Christians to pray for many Muslims to find Jesus Christ. — Mark Gabriel, , Author and former lecturer, University of Cairo|Fresh, striking, highly illuminating, and sometimes heartbreaking, Qureshi’s story is worth a thousand textbooks. It should be read by Muslims and all who care deeply about our Muslim friends and fellow-citizens. — Dr. Os Guinness, , Author and social critic|Nabeel Qureshi’s story is among the most unique two or three testimonies that I have ever heard. Add to this the fact that I knew Nabeel quite well while he was still a Muslim, having visited with and spoken to him several times during his search for the one true God. His quest brought together several exceptional features: a very bright mind, extraordinary sincerity, original research, and a willingness to follow the evidence trail wherever it took him. His search led to the cross and to Jesus Christ, who was resurrected from the dead. — Gary R. Habermas, , Distinguished Research Professor, Liberty University|Nabeel describes the yearning in the hearts of millions of Muslims around the world. This book is a must-read for all seeking to share the hope of Christ with Muslims. — Fouad Masri, , President and CEO, Crescent Project|This book gives westerners a glimpse of the richness of family and love in a devout Muslim home; it is an enviable picture of respect, devotion, and society. But Christians and Muslims alike are told stories about their religions when they are young, while few have ever personally researched the writings of their founding fathers to assess the validity that undergirds their respective faiths. In his personal quest to know the truth, Nabeel Qureshi paves the way for an analytical study of the faiths, dissecting the Christian and Islamic arguments, specifically citing numerous Islamic hadith and early Christian texts, so that the reader can see a logical progression to the analyses. But it is also a deeply personal heart-wrenching and tear-evoking saga of the life of a young Muslim growing up in the West, a gripping biography that is impossible to put down. In the end, many people of faith will agree: Nabeel Qureshi needs our prayers. God bless this young man for his boldness, and we pray for his protection. — James M. Tour, , Professor of Chemistry, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Rice University|For anyone seeking understanding of their Muslim neighbors or colleagues, this is a book to read. We go on a journey from the inside out. We are introduced to the depth of spirituality, the love and honor of family, and the way a person “sees” and “feels” in a devout Muslim home. This is profound book that skillfully shows the core differences between the gospel and Islamic claims. I highly recommend it. — Dr. Stuart McAllister, , Regional Director The Americas, Ravi Zacharias International Ministries|Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus is an urgently needed book with a gripping story. It reaches both East and West, teaching Christians about Islam from an insider’s perspective and helping Muslims understand the love and truth of Jesus. Nabeel Qureshi masterfully argues for the Gospel while painting a beautiful portrait of Muslim families and heritage, avoiding the fear-mongering and finger-pointing that are all too pervasive in today’s sensationalist world. I unreservedly recommend this book to all. —It will feed your heart and mind, while keeping your fingers turning the page! — Josh McDowell, , Author and Speaker|Nabeel Qureshi is a medical doctor by training with two master’s degrees in biblical studies and further academic work on the horizon. He first began to study the Bible in order to challenge it and, incredibly, came to know Jesus as a result. In my many travels, I have seldom seen such genuine intellect combined matched with passion. I am thrilled to see his unique and gripping story in print and know that you will be encouraged and profoundly challenged by it as well. This is truly a “must-read book” for our times, as diverse worldviews each must face the test of truth. — Ravi Zacharias, , Author and Speaker

One of the greatest challenge for evangelism in the modern age is the profound lack of intimate relationships with those outside of our "group". Whether it is politics, lifestyle, or, religion, it is a far deal more comfortable to talk "about" another person/group than it is to talk WITH them. Christians have become far too comfortable with talking at people and doing what I like to call, "Drive by Evangelism".

My purpose is not to unpack the whens, why’s and hows for how this came to be. What matters is that it is wrong. Deadly wrong. And if Paul’s letters in the New Testament are to be considered Scripture, then we must to be willing to engage our hearts and lives with the people who are in desperate need of the Gospel. And, not just for the sake of the Gospel, but for the reality that the "other" is someone who is made in the image of God and we are called to love them regardless of the artificial and man made walls that may exist between us.

With that in mind, Nabeel Qureshi’s new book, "Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus", is an insightful and challenging personal story that does much, for me at least, to engage hearts and minds with the message of the Gospel in a "foreign" culture.

Regardless of the interesting information a book may provide, it is important to understand the purpose and themes the author intends to convey to be able to accurately informed by that information.
